H Annie Besant γεννήθηκε το 1847 στο Κλάπχαμ του Λονδίνου. Υπήρξε ένα διακεκριμένο στέλεχος της Θεοσοφικής Εταιρείας, και θεωρήθηκε μία ιδιαίτερα προοδευτική φυσιογνωμία για την εποχή της.
Ήταν μέλος της Φαμπιανής Εταιρείας, της γνωστής σοσιαλιστικής οργάνωσης, από την οποία ιδρύθηκε αργότερα το Κόμμα των Εργατικών της Αγγλίας.
Για ένα διάστημα από το 1870 είχε θέση συντάκτη στο National Reformer, μέσω του οποίου δημοσιεύονταν ιδιαίτερα προοδευτικές ιδέες για την εποχή. Μάλιστα, σύρθηκε στα δικαστήρια για τις ιδέες της, αλλά δεν μπόρεσαν να την καταδικάσουν.
Έδειξε ιδιαίτερο ενδιαφέρον για την Ινδία, αναμείχθηκε στον αγώνα των Ινδών για την απελευθέρωσή τους από τους Άγγλους, και το 1916 ίδρυσε τον συνασπισμό για τη Διακυβέρνησης της Ινδίας, ενώ το 1917 είχε ηγετικό ρόλο και στο Κόμμα του Εθνικού Κογκρέσου από το οποίο αποχώρησε αργότερα διαφωνώντας με τον Μαχάτμα Γκάντι. επίσης το αδιάκοπο ενδιαφέρον της για ην παιδεία την οδήγησε νωρίτερα (1898) στη δημιουργία του Κεντρικού Ινδικού Κολέγιου στο Μπεναρές των Ινδιών.
Από τα μέσα της δεκαετίας του 1920 ταξίδεψε στην Αγγλία και στις ΗΠΑ
Πέθανε το 1933 στην Ινδία και η τέφρα της σκορπίσηκε στη θάλασσα
